Why Visit Jiufen?

Perched on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Jiufen (九份) is one of Taiwan's most iconic destinations. Its narrow stone staircases, red paper lanterns, teahouses, and sweeping sea views have captivated visitors for decades. Many travelers draw comparisons to the animated worlds of Studio Ghibli — and whether or not the connection is literal, the atmosphere is undeniably magical, especially at dusk.

Getting There

Jiufen is located in the Ruifang District of New Taipei City, roughly 45 minutes from central Taipei.

  • By bus: Take the MRT to Zhongxiao Fuxing Station, then bus 1062 directly to Jiufen. This is the most popular option for visitors without a car.
  • By train + bus: Take a train from Taipei Main Station to Ruifang Station, then a local bus or taxi up the hill.
  • By taxi or scooter: Gives you flexibility, but parking in Jiufen is extremely limited.

What to Do in Jiufen

Walk the Old Street (基山街)

Jiufen Old Street is the main artery of the village — a winding lane packed with shops selling taro balls, fish balls, peanut ice cream rolls, and local crafts. It's lively and bustling; go early on weekdays to avoid the thickest crowds.

Visit a Traditional Teahouse

Jiufen's teahouses are legendary. Settle into a window seat overlooking the bay and order a pot of Taiwanese oolong. A-Mei Tea House and Jiufen Tea House are among the most well-known, offering that quintessential Jiufen experience of tea, snacks, and misty ocean views.

Climb Shuqi Road (豎崎路)

This famous stepped lane lined with red lanterns is the defining image of Jiufen. It looks best around sunset when the lanterns glow and the light turns golden. Climb to the top for panoramic views across the rooftops and harbor.

Explore the Gold Mining History

Jiufen was once a booming gold mining town in the Japanese colonial era. The nearby Gold Ecological Park in Jinguashi tells this story through preserved mining infrastructure and engaging exhibits.

Practical Tips

  3. Stay for sunset and evening — Jiufen transforms after dark when the lanterns light up.
  4. Combine with a visit to Shifen for sky lanterns and the impressive waterfall nearby.

Jiufen rewards the visitor who slows down. Skip the rush to photograph everything and instead find a teahouse seat, order a pot of oolong, and let the village's timeless atmosphere wash over you.
